Nurse–midwifery care started in the United Sates in the 1940’s in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Nurse-midwifery practice is the independent management of women’s health care focusing on pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and newborn care. They assist with the family planning and gynecological needs of all women. They provide history and physical examination, contraception counseling, preconception and maternity care, prescriptions, pre- menopausal and post menopausal consultation. Today there are 144 midwives in New Mexico and they deliver 30% of the babies born.
